International students participate in an English-intensive language class.
  • ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

    Undergraduate Students

    Requirements include:

    • A $40 application fee
    • Official transcripts
    • A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Test System (IELTS) scores.

    A minimum TOEFL score of 71 (IBT), 525 (PBT), minimum IELTS score of 6.0 or minimum PTE score of 50 is required for undergraduate admission. Official scores are accepted directly from the testing agency.

    Strong freshman applicants will present a 2.5 minimum GPA in core academic subjects. Core requirements for academic units/hours vary for freshmen and transfers.

    Freshman applicants will be evaluated according to the educational system of the country in which they completed their studies. Transfer applicants may be required to submit a foreign credential evaluation of university transcripts in addition to official university transcripts.

     

    Graduate Students

    Requirements include:

    • A $60 application fee
    • Official transcripts and degrees or diplomas
    • GRE, GMAT, or MAT score from testing service
    • A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Test System (IELTS) or Pearson Test of English (PTE) scores
    • Three letters of recommendation and a statement of purpose

    English Language Institute

    • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
    • Non-resident applicants must apply for an F-1 visa. Individuals who come to the United States on B-1/B-2 visas may not study.
    • Students already in the United States who have F-1 visas and are studying in another intensive English program may apply for Transfer to the ELI.
    • Legal Permanent Residents in the United States and U.S. citizens who are not native-English speakers are welcome to apply for enrollment.

    Admissions Deadlines

    Admissions *deadlines for both undergraduate and graduate applicants are:

    • May 1 - Fall admission
    • October 1 - Spring admission

    *Some departments have different deadlines for graduate applications. Graduate applicants should contact their major department for more information.

    The deadline for ELI is two months prior to the term start date.

    Undergraduate & Graduate Programs

    Tuition and fees at The University Southern Mississippi are among the lowest in the United States.

    The proposed minimum cost for a nine-month academic year – including tuition, fees, housing, meals, health insurance and other expenses – is $21,808 for 2017-18.

    Freshman and transfer applicants may be considered for scholarships. Graduate students may indicate their preference to be considered for assistantships in the application for admission.

    International Undergraduate Scholarships

    English Language Institute (ELI)

    Tuition for each eight-week term in the English Language Institute is $2,500, and the estimated cost of housing, meals, health insurance and other expenses per term is approximately $2,815. The total cost per nine-month academic year for ELI students is $21,258.

    This does not include travel to and from Hattiesburg, the fees associated with your F-1 visa application, vacation or semester break housing or personal/incidental expenses during each ELI term.

Undergraduate Programs

Many of our majors offer more than one degree, which allows you to specialize.

In total, there are more than 140 degree programs, spanning the liberal arts, business, education, psychology, health, nursing, science and technology. A number of our programs are nationally recognized.

Graduate Programs

The University of Southern Mississippi has exceptional master's programs in computer science, public health, business, polymer science and physics, along with competitive doctoral programs.

These programs are among more than 60 at the master’s level, offering over 170 separate degree plans; and more than 20 programs at the doctoral level, offering over 80 degree plans.

English Language Institute

Students improve their English during our eight-week terms, available five times a year. Students are in class 25 hours a week.

The English Language Institute at The University of Southern Mississippi is one of the oldest university intensive English programs in the United States and is a member of UCIEP, a national consortium of English-intensive programs.

Hattiesburg

The main University of Southern Mississippi campus is in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. With more than 140,000 residents, the metropolitan area is a medium- sized community by American standards.

Hattiesburg, known as the "Hub City," is located about 90 minutes from New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Hattiesburg and The University of Southern Mississippi earned two national rankings in 2014: No. 10 in the Livability.com “10 Best College Towns” and No. 24 in the GreatValueColleges.net “50 Great Affordable College Towns in the U.S.”

International Community

There were over 500 international students from 76 countries studying at The University of Southern Mississippi in fall 2016. Nepal, India and China are the most represented countries.

Our Office of International Services assists students and helps them adjust to the campus and local community. Students from Nepal, China, India, Korea and Vietnam have their own student organizations.

Gulf Coast

Long Beach, Mississippi, home to the Gulf Park campus, and Ocean Springs, home to our Gulf Coast Research Lab, are two of a series of connected beach communities along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, each with its own history and personality.
