Polymer Science / Polymer Science & Engineering

Polymer Science and Engineering is a multidisciplinary field that combines chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering, and biochemistry.

What Does a Polymer Scientist Do?

  • Design and develop new materials for existing applications
  • Develop new approaches to old problems
  • Determine the right materials for a given purpose
  • Develop new processes to make materials
  • Work toward solutions to important problems

After completing required initial sequences in Intro to Polymers, chemistry, physics and calculus, students begin studying more advanced topics such as polymer organic chemistry, polymer processing, engineering thermodynamics, mechanics, and electronics.

All polymer science and engineering majors are actively involved in research and complete a year-long engineering design project and are actively involved in research for at least two years of their undergraduate education

Degree Options

There are two Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees available with this major.
