Music (History and Literature)

The BM in Music History and Literature attracts students who are preparing for advanced studies in musicology.

When You Think Music, Think Southern Miss

Candidates for the BM in Music History and Literature degree typically enjoy an insatiable curiosity that compels them to read widely and draw connections between a variety of fields. Although the program is inherently interdisciplinary, students are encouraged to cultivate their own musicianship by taking applied lessons, performing in ensembles, and taking rigorous coursework in music history, theory, and literature.

Foreign language study and strong writing and critical thinking skills are expected of successful candidates.

Coursework

  • MUS 199: Success for Music Majors. An introduction to being a music major. Course will focus on skills needed to be a successful music major, performer and teacher.
  • Applied private lessons. Hour-long, one-on-one lessons with a professional performer/faculty member.
  • Music Theory. A wide range of courses with various levels of concentration
  • Capstone Experience. A music literature class for your instrument or voice

Outcomes

The degree offers students advanced training leading toward professional careers in college teaching and scholarly research.

The School of Music gives over 200 performances a year and has over 40 faculty members: music historians and educators, conductors, instrumentalists and vocalists.
