Liberal Studies

Designed with the needs of a wide variety of students in mind, the Bachelor of Liberal Studies offers a structured, but flexible, path to a bachelor’s degree.

How Can a Degree in Liberal Studies Help Me?

Many students, including students in the military, find the flexibility of the BLS allows them to choose courses that fit their schedule or can be completed online.

Those who have started a four-year degree and then needed to take time away for family, work, or financial reasons find the flexibility of the requirements offers a timely way to complete their degree. Mid-career professionals who seek a bachelor’s degree for further advancement in their field will discover a broad academic program with options for completing the program around a work schedule.

Coursework

In addition to the General Education Curriculum of the University, students completing the BLS design their own general studies degree by taking 36 hours of coursework from three of the six colleges at The University of Southern Mississippi.

Students also choose an 18-hour concentration from among the minors offered at USM. Seniors complete a four (4) credit hour capstone experience by developing and implementing either an individual research project or an experiential learning project.
