A student enjoys a magnificent view on a geography field trip

Geography can be applied in a wide range of fields, including studying the shifting distribution of plants and animals (biogeography), climate change, the weather, coastal geography, glaciers, oceans, economic and social geography, and more.

What Do Geographers Do?

Here are a few examples. They:

  • make maps, including really cool digital maps;
  • plan cities to be more healthy and sustainable;
  • use computer tools in Geographic Information Technology to study spatial aspects of human society; patterns of climates, landforms, vegetation, soils, and water; disaster response and relief; invasive species; and many others;
  • study weather and climate;
  • study cultures and economic development;
  • study human-environment interaction.

Geography is a wide field comprised of cultural and physical geography and geographic information technology. As such, the undergraduate programs are flexible so that students can focus their studies on areas that they are interested in.

Basic courses include Map Reading; Weather and Climate; and Landforms, Hydrology and Biogeography. Upper-level courses include choices of Conservation of Natural Resources, remote sensing, GIT courses, and sustainable development.
