Finance

This major teaches the tools finance professionals use to make value-increasing decisions across a variety of career paths.

What do finance professionals do?

The Banking and Finance curriculum provides foundations in theory, analytical tools and problem-solving methods fundamental to a broad array of applications that are vital to financial and nonfinancial firms alike.

Courses in this major are more quantitative than in most other business areas. They are designed to teach students how to evaluate financial and nonfinancial assets, especially with regard to cash flows and risk. The courses also instruct students in understanding how changing market conditions affect those values and risks, and where to find financial information.

Coursework

The Foundational Principles (FIN 300) course teaches inputs and structure of managerial decisions related to value creation and preservation of the firm in the interests of the firm’s stakeholders. This is followed by the major core courses (Financial Management, Money and Capital Markets, and Investments) that build on those concepts and tools and the major electives that students choose to increase their knowledge in specialized areas of applications such as bank management, real estate valuation, security analysis, and working capital management.
