Begin learning fundamentals of accounting with our two sophomore level courses – Introduction to Financial Accounting (ACC 200) and Managerial Accounting (ACC 220). The junior and senior year courses provide more depth in financial accounting (Intermediate Accounting I and II and Advanced Accounting), plus courses in cost accounting, income tax accounting, accounting systems, auditing, governmental and not-for-profit accounting, and advanced business law for accountants.
Internship credit is available and encouraged, though not required. We infuse our courses with different technologies needed for your career, beginning with Microsoft Excel certification.
Study abroad programs led by USM business faculty are established for Japan/South Korea and as part of the British Studies Program. Ask us about opportunities to learn in other countries.
There is one Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) degree available with this major.

Learn about our tax system and the various items that go into a tax return. Remember tax evasion is illegal, but tax avoidance is legal and can save your clients on their taxes. They will thank you for that!
Become aware of the differences in accounting used by governmental and not-for-profit entities. You may view the financial statements for the United States of America as well as state and local government entities. Choose a favorite not-for-profit and analyze their statements as well.
Study the very important attest function of accounting – learn what auditors do when they perform an audit and issue an audit opinion. You’ll also be introduced to consequences of what happens when auditors fail to uncover something (think Enron and WorldCom)!
Conglomerates are the name of the game in big business these days. Learn how relationships among entities impact financial reporting. This course prepares you to combine financial statements of related entities like parent companies and their subsidiaries.

Southern Miss undergraduate degrees are available online, at the Hattiesburg campus, at the Gulf Park campus, and/or through a hybrid delivery that includes both online and on-campus courses.
All courses listed in the degree plan are available online. A student would not have to take a face-to-face course to complete this degree.
50 percent or more of the degree plan’s courses in Major Area of Study Requirements AND 50 percent or more of courses in Curriculum Requirement are available online. Remaining courses are face-to-face at the Hattiesburg or Gulf Park campus, as noted.
